Banana Army recruits required for
2005
Energetic volunteers required across the UK
throughout 2005 to assist LRF with their cycling, marathon and triathlon
efforts. If any of the runners and cyclists in the 7 Club are interested please
drop me an email for an events/contacts diary.
Two step up to the plate so far, Matt Plummer – see below, and Natalie Delahunty.
Natalie is the daughter of Club member Michael Cowen’s partner and currently
runs for Oxford City Athletics Club. Natalie has chosen the LRF Banana Army for
her charity project at Headington Girls School in Oxford. Good luck Natalie and
thanks for your kind thoughts and support!
And just look at
this fine bunch of fundraisers:

This one is a story to wonder at!
Club member Matthew Plummer is running in the 25th Anniversary London
Marathon on the 17th April this year. He is aiming to raise £2000 and beyond for
NtL for the Leukaemia Research Fund.
As to the ‘wonder’, Matt survived an almost fatal accident as a passenger in an
RTA on Friday 13th in December 1996, suffering a smashed pelvis and a serious
head injury. At 22 years old he had to re-learn how to walk, talk and
communicate and his parents were originally told that he would more than likely
never walk unaided for the rest of his life.
Through a great deal of grit and determination Matt has proved all the
specialists wrong and has run 5 marathons in the four years since the accident.
Matt also ran the full summer series cross country events only to snap his right
leg on the final stretch round Rudyard Lake in 2003. As a result he was unable
to take up his place in the 2004 marathon but once again has recovered and the
Marathon organisers have rolled his entry over to the 2005 Marathon. Now I know
where ‘Bionic’ came from!
Please support possibly his last running of the London Marathon here:

Norman Verona has just been informed that the Blue Light Show is taking place
this year and asks:
“Can I please have volunteers for Sunday 31st JULY 2005. Volunteers who come on
the Saturday can help with light duties in setting up* and join in the pre show
party on the Saturday night. Camping, food and showers are provided as last
year. I'll organise a band and beer for Saturday night
As I will effectively be running the show I will need even more people than last
year in order to break our £8300 benchmark. We need 80 volunteers in total this
year (we had 60 last year). That means about 65 from the club. You can drag any
friends / relations along if you want
Can I therefore ask volunteers to please email lynne@dmservices.co.uk
*Most of the heavy work will be done by me and the mounted section during the
week before the show. I will be setting up the lightweight stuff on the Friday
and Saturday.”

It's an amazing
amount of donations that come from the goodwill between club members offering
help, advice, parts and assistance to each other from a huge wealth of
experience and knowledge. A benefit that is totally unexpected when filling out
a club membership form and then getting involved. Maybe we should have a warning
on the form to the effect that membership to the Lotus 7 Club of GB is likely to
change your life - forever! All for the love of these funny wee beasties eh!

Under Gift Aid LRF can claim tax back on any
donation, large or small, providing you are a UK taxpayer. This means that at
no cost to you they are able to claim back 28p for every £1 you give
providing you pay income tax or capital gains tax to cover the amount they
reclaim.
If you pay tax at a higher rate, you can claim further tax relief on your Self
Assessment tax return.
LRF promise "If you wish, we guarantee not to use your details for any other
purpose other than to reclaim tax on your donation. We won't pass them on to
anyone else, send you newsletters or appeal letters - you won't hear from us
again unless you want to. By agreeing to allow us to gift aid your donation,
you'll be helping to increase it by nearly a third, without any extra cost to
yourself, and with our low running costs, this will go straight into research.
Thanks."
