A few more words and a sun-drenched picture of our intrepid cyclist, Jan Smit in a 7 Club tee-shirt, who you may recall cycled from his home in The Netherlands to the south of France and back again raising money for NtL in the process:

Well, what can I say. Very enjoyable trip on mostly secondary or back roads, avoiding as much traffic as possible, allowing me to enjoy the landscape, the little villages, the people and nature as much as possible. Once I had reached Stes. Marie de la Mer after 14 days I realized that I had made a slight miscalculation in the total distance. The extra hundred or so kilometers equals extra days of cycling which could mean that I might have a problem completing the total distance in the available time. With allowing myself only ONE day of rest I managed to do the return trip in the remaining time.Jan Smit - the one day of rest!

This looks perhaps like a race to you, but I can assure you, dear reader, that it didn't feel like that at all. I enjoyed every minute of it (despite the occasional shower of rain), and would do it again any time. Raising money for the LRF gave me just that extra bit of motivation I sometimes needed to climb another hill (and believe me there were plenty to climb).

Once completed and at home I soon missed the daily routine, the physical exercise and specially the daily visits to the Boulanger for some fresh croissants and a baguette.

In short one of the best trips made so far (thanks to the weather, my trusty bike and the fact that I had NO punctures)!

Apologies to all those members who have tried to get in touch with me by phone but failed to do so. Although I had forwarded my phone to my mobile I had to switch it off during the day after a week or so (low on batteries, and insufficient means to recharge them). Sorry for this. Perhaps better luck next time?

Well done Jan, a great effort and glad you enjoyed the trip so much that there may be a next time?

The silly season is under way, it’s so silly I forgot to wish everyone all the very best of the season, but then I did write the December article in October and by the time you read this you’ll have forgotten what I’m talking about as it will be March and your Christmas credit card bills will be in for payment… bah humbug!!
