NUKE THE LEUK ’00

10/00(12/00)

Before I start, just a short apology for the gap in articles but I've been away for the best part of 3 months taking advantage of as much of the fresh new tarmac in the mountains of southern Spain as the wee beastie could handle.  Oh yes and a spot of retraining on compooters and "How to avoid un-illuminated galvanised wheelie bins left in the middle of the road in southern Spain!" Tim Sture had fun raising money for NtL, he says "Ever since 1985, I'd wanted to get a Caterham 7, but never quite got round to it, despite having a demonstration ride in 1993 and doing an Autotest in 1996. Then, in 1999, I signed up for the Caterham Race Academy - the easy way to get into competition if you're a bit nervous, like me.

"While building the car, my wife's cousin died of Leukaemia, so I thought I would make sure that something good would come out of my competing, even if I was rubbish, by raising some money.

"In April 2000 I had my first event, a hillclimb at Wiscombe in Devon. That morning, I was very nervous, and would have sold the car, given the chance! But a few minutes later, after my first run up the hill, I was hooked.

"I somehow managed to finish 9th on the day, which apparently wasn't a fluke as I finished 9th at Harewood a couple of weeks later. And again 9th at Lydden a few weeks later. With some better and some worse results elsewhere, I finished 9th overall in the championships after 8 events!

"I even managed not to prang the car, which made my wife very happy, and is better than most people managed!

"At the end of it all, I've raised over £300 for LRF, have had a fantastic time, met some great people, and got the confidence to take part in motor sport. A year to remember."

"At the end of it all" eh? I really don't think so Tim - This is the beginning, once bitten, forever smitten!! I'll bet you're on a circuit at the next opportunity and with a BIG grin all over your face! S'pose you've got a Lotus Mk 9 on your Christmas wish list?

What a stonking couple of months! Well done all! Well worth the wait eh?

Now something to think about over the winter months, Roy Blyth has come up with another mega fundraising idea, just like the 'Car The Club Built' but one far more people can get involved with by driving their wee beasties! Sound good so far? Right what we want to do is a round Britain Rally for NtL that will take place on one summer weekend where area members will drive across their area and meet up with the next area members. No details have been sorted yet but what we need are some volunteers to form a Rally Team to thrash out the logistics, organise the weekend and maybe arrange corporate sponsorship for the event….. please!
