Surrey’s AO, Angus Denny, sent me a little note with the above cheques.  On the note was a p.s. “That’s your lot for 1999”.

Well, Angus, “lot” is the operative word. That is exactly what Surrey have sent me over the year, a huge “LOT”, almost £2,000 in fact! A truly stonking result from Surrey Area Events and individual members.  A special thanks to Tony Isherwood for organising so many of them!

Magnif!

NtL’00 already sees our man, Will Paul, fresh on the starting block for our season opener.  Will is going to attempt the London Marathon on the 16th April to raise money for Nuke the Leuk. Not without personal reasons unfortunately.  Will’s girlfriend, Annabelle is currently helping her Mum, Ilse (an anagram of Elise?) to Nuke the Leuk. Ilse lives in Frielberg, Germany where she is receiving treatment.  After 3 courses of chemo last year the powers to be have decided she will need a transplant, so the good news is that she must be in remission or they wouldn’t consider a transplant!

Will currently sports a 1600 Crossflow Cat but at Annabelle’s insistence awaits delivery of a Superlight 1.6K Supersport with Tillet seats and a Mango Yellow paint job!  In fact Annabelle dragged Will out of bed one Saturday morning to go and place the order with Caterham for the car as the Xflow just isn’t quick enough for her!  Bit of an expert is Annabelle, her father used to own and race Grand Prix cars so she has a great deal of power-off oversteer in her blood.  Cor lucky bugger, women like that are harder to find than hen’s teeth!  Monday to Friday Will is a city slicker involved with Venture Capital so he already knows how to live dangerously.  (Can I have some, please?)

He’s 27 years old and must be pretty fit already due to the snowboarding, skiing, squash and windsurfing he enjoys while not wee beasting.  Will Paul But ever the modest one, he says that he’s never done a marathon before, and the way training’s going he’s not sure he’ll do one again as he admits that the fitness curve is a steep one and he is starting from the bottom of the trough!   It doesn’t help knowing he could drive the same distance in a 7 in about 15 minutes!

It's all Peter Carmichael's fault (another Surrey member) that he bought a Seven in the first place.  Will had two "mad, mad outings" in Peter's 7.  The first through the lanes of Surrey, and all that Will could remember was "the noise, the wind, the cold, the sound of stones chipping away at the wings, the noise, the cold, the noide, and ther SPEEED!"  The second time out was to a track day on the Silverstone National Circuit.  The moment I decided that I had to buy a Seven, was when I was kindly taken out for a ride in a pearlescent purple TVR Cerbera and I thought how tame…..  It was only when I got back to the pits that I realised the full significance of that thought!”  Once bitten, forever smitten.

Ok, so here’s the deal. I’m going to print off some sponsorship forms; you know what’s going to happen then don’t you?  That’s right, I’ll then send them out to all the Area Organisers who will then delegate their best salesmen types to get them all filled in, front AND back pages.  Easy isn’t it?  There are 44 lines on each form for sponsors to complete at a £1 a go.  So the budget should be say £40 per Area Organiser and with 35 Area Organisers this will net Will (no pun intended) a cool £1400 minimum.  Off you go then.

Let’s get this year off with a big bang and give Will all the support necessary to make his effort well worthwhile.

Will Paul and his wee beastie.
