WINTER STORAGE FOR SEVENS
As the summer ends many owners of Sevens, in
particular those with concours cars are thinking about the problems of storing their cars
over the long winter months ahead.
There are really two categories of storage, the
first where you are able, on suitable dry days, to bring your Seven out of its garage and
run it for a short time - albeit only up and down your driveway! The second involves
total hibernation and is rather more of a problem.
Semi-storage is by far the easiest. It is only
necessary to keep the car taxed and insured against road risk if you actually intend (or
have no alternative owing to the situation of your garage) to bring it out and take it
onto the highway, weather and road conditions permitting. Otherwise, if your are
lucky enough to have a driveway of even average length or even a good stretch of lawn (!)
it is quite possible to leave your car on laid-up, insurance cover (much
cheaper) and claim a refund of any road tax. Unless we are in for a really appalling
winter, heaven forbid, it is usually more than likely that you will be able to bring your
Seven out for an airing on an average of at least once a month - quite sufficient to keep
all parts in good working order. However, even if you adopt this course of storage
it is still necessary to take some elementary precautions against seizing of certain
components etc.
If, on the other hand, you prefer to bed your
Seven down into total hibernation for the months of November - March, then a much more
stringent set of rules apply.
