Lydden
Hill....
Went down to Lydden yesterday, for only
the second time, and I was completely bowled over by the friendliness of
the place, the people running it, and the people competing. A real
treat too, to see a sprint in the morning followed by an afternoon's
qualifying and racing.
I went down with Joyce and Merrick
Linnett (thanks very much for the lift chaps) to watch Lol competing in
the last SEMSEC meeting of the
season. There were quite a few Lotus 7 Club members competing
and a few more of us watching. It was a great day's racing with Rod
Birley (Ford Escort WRC) dominating every race that he took part in
(although he's so far ahead each time that I wonder why he does it) and it
was fabulously exciting watching President Lol, John Bird, Julian Sage,
Stephen Storey and others (all in 7s) battling against the likes of Toyota
Carinas and 4wd Cosworth Sierra Sapphires. These big cars proving
that the 7 is not the unbeatable car that we often think it is.
Anyway, to cut to the quick, Lol was
dong well in two championships; going into the meeting he was lying fourth
in the the Credit Professional Sports Car Championship and leading the
John Taylor Handicap Championship by a mere 6 points. Point scoring
in some of the series is complicated but the John Taylor races are fairly
simple, with 20 points awarded for a win 19 for second, 18 for third
etc. However, this meeting saw double points being awarded for the
last race. The handicapping is done in such a way that for the
fastest car to win, it would have to lap the slowest car three
times. In normal circumstances, where the race is over twelve laps
of this wonderfully technical circuit this is a tall order.
Yesterday with failing light, the race was shortened to 10 laps.
This changed it to a very tall order indeed. Julian Sage won the
race, with John Bird coming in second, Ron Gee the championship leader
finished 6th and Lol finished in 8th.
This meant that Ron Gee got 30 points for this race giving him a total of
110 and Lol got 26 giving him a total of 112.
So, subject to appeal, El Presidente has
won the John Taylor Handicap Championship by 2 points from MGB driver Ron
Gee (now confirmed) and from the sums being done by one of the other competitors, he may
well have come second in the Credit Professional Sports Car Championship,
that's to be confirmed later this week, but that result is also subject to
appeal. (now confirmed). It appears that Lol has also come
second (beating Rod Birley into third place) in the South East Sports and Saloon Car challenge, what a busy boy. Many Congratulations Lol!

Rumours...
At next week's motor show at the NEC,
Caterham Cars' stand will finally put to rest all those rumours about a
new Seven. Thanks to Roger Green we can reveal that this new Seven called the Roadsport
SV is longer, wider, with a longer wheelbase(2305mm)
and wider track (1446mm). Apparently
as a result of customer feedback this model has been developed on an increased dimension cockpit – an extra 80mm in length and 110mm in width.
All current engine options are available for this new
Roadsport chassis, however tooling is being developed for the wider JPE
type screens and a couple of other items. More news and photos as
soon as we get them. Details of what's on the stand here.
